When you think about competition, you think about someone threatening your position.
So what do you do? You make sure they don’t come even close to you. But does this much focus draw your attention away from your own goals to progress with your blog and home business?
It’s frustrating when you’re not getting ahead, but yet you see your competition getting ahead with ease. Or at least it seems. The worst thing you can do is try to hinder their success. But the best thing you can do is not to put effort in tearing down all the other buildings so yours can look the tallest.
Competition equals collaboration and in this post I’m going to give you 7 ways you can collaborate with your competition as well as benefit from them. This will keep you progressing in the long run!
“When I was a kid, there was no collaboration; it’s you with a camera bossing your friends around. But as an adult, filmmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these films by yourself.” ~ Steven Spielberg
We compete everyday because most of us, whether directly or indirectly were taught to compete as kids.
You compete every single day no matter where you live.
For me I see it while I’m driving. If you have a car, 9 times out of 10 you are competing for something as a driver. Here’s some great examples:
- Getting to the gas pump first
- Trying to be in the front of traffic while driving on the street
- Trying to get the parking space closest to the store
- Always trying to beat the traffic light before it turns red
- Speeding up on a highway/freeway to get in front of people on the on ramp
And you know what really instigates all of this? It’s always that one song like “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf that really turns you into a competitor on the road!
We all have this Survival Of The Fittest/Every Man For Himself mentality which can be great to have up until we need people.
The DIY (Do It Yourself) Strategy can actually do some damage and defeats the purpose of becoming successful so that we can have the Freedom we want!
Yes, this is ultimately the goal for the majority if not all who start home businesses. We want that Freedom and Sovereignty with no worries that ultimately influences our happiness.
Yes, if you have a home business you’re pretty much competing with everyone whether you’re in the same niche or not.
You are competing to get your audience’s attention but some of us will go against the very training and outside of ourselves just to accomplish this.
You want to get to those people before your competition does, right?
It’s great to think like this, but there’s a way of looking at your competition to where you make it a win/win situation for you and them.
And starting off, the one thing you want to do is learn how to attract the right people!
Your targeted audience will include your competition.
To have a successful home business or blog, competition equals collaboration!
When you and your competition can learn and support each other, then success will constantly go in full circle! In this arena, this is how good competition can benefit everyone
7 Actions You Can Do That Will Benefit You And Your Competition
When it comes to your competition you can learn a lot from them. One person doesn’t know everything and a wise person recognizes this. With that said, They will have a bunch of resources they can go to whenever they want information about a particular topic.
This is one vital reason why it’s wise to build your connections with other bloggers and people within your niche. They may be your competition per se, but the more serious ones are great people you can collaborate with.
Now what if you’re selling the same thing?
Is it still ok to make sure you ‘knock out’ the competition?
In a sense, you are competing with others, but as I mentioned before, if you collaborate with others, you can also make it a win/win situation.
It makes it a lot easier for you and your competitors. If you and your competitors build competency and value towards the same products/services then this is one way to make it a win/win. In this arena, there’s no room for scarcity.
This is why I love This Post by Don Purdum where he goes into detail about how you can separate yourself from those that sell the same thing as you do.
The goal is to get you away from the “scarcity/every man for himself” mentality, and show you how collaborating directly and indirectly with your competition without leaving a sour taste in your competitions mouths!
Link Out To A Valuable Post Of Theirs
Many of you are afraid of losing your traffic!
You may have the greatest content in the world, but like I said before, you don’t know everything. Sometimes those that are considered your “competition” may know more about another subject related to your post than you do.
So why not give the courtesy of linking out to other blogs and websites that will also give your target audience the value that they’re looking for also?
If you’re only looking out for yourself, you may end up being by yourself.
The people who attracts the most people are the ones that are of value to others. If your audience can feel this, they will respond the way you want them to.
So do your audience a big favor and recommend them to sites that they can also gain solutions from.
Recommend Successful Bloggers Within Your Posts
Let me let you in on a secret!
At one point for a long time I couldn’t get over a threshold as far as generating traffic.
The number of incoming visitors either stayed the same or lessened.
I’ve read many blogs, and they recommended some top notch bloggers within my niche for their readers to check out. The problem was that I didn’t go to any of these recommended sites for a long time.
But I got fed up, and started subscribing to the blogs of these top notch bloggers. And on top of that, I started reading and commenting on them.
You know what else happened after that?
I started generating more traffic as you might have guessed.
Now you’re probably wondering if I still went back to the blogs that recommended me these successful bloggers? I sure in the hell did!
Because of the connection I already had with them and plus the value and solutions they still provided on each post they published.
Will you lose any traffic if you recommend top successful bloggers within your niche? Well that depends on the connection they have with you and the value and solutions you convey on each post.
Yes, I just repeated myself and If you’re not doing this, this would be a great time to start now.
Mention and Share Each Other’s Posts
Now speaking of generating more traffic, this is another way to do so!
For the longest I would share blog post but I never would mention the blogger on the sites I shared the posts on.
Well I tell you, sharing is great and shows how much you appreciate the topics of the author, but if you mention their names with the share, then I tell you that this is golden.
Mentioning the bloggers name will help you get recognized even more, and at the same time it gives them another reason for them to check out your content, share, and mention you.
Check these out:
Here I just mentioned and shared Adrienne Smith’s post on Google+
And Here’s Adrienne’s Reply
Here I shared Rebekah Radice’s post on LinkedIn:
And here’s Rebekah’s Reply
Sometimes you mentioned them and they point out your mistakes. Great connections like this don’t come to often. So make sure you maintain them. Here’s one where after sharing Steven Wilson’s post he gave me a heads up of what was going on with one of my pop up forms.
Here’s my reply
These are the type of connections that you want to get start from just merely sharing other bloggers post and at the same time mentioning them.
Now imagine if your content gets shared and mentioned but a successful blogger with a lot of followers.
What do you think will happen?
You’re right, you’ll definitely generate even more traffic to your blog!
Yes, in this case, it isn’t about what you know, it’s about who you know. And above this, it’s about who knows you!
Expert Round Up
So far I haven’t done an expert round up.
But, I’ve read many of them and they have been helpful as far as what I should focus on.
For those of you that don’t know, an expert round up is where you have a list of experts in a specific niche that share their opinions on a particular topic.
So let’s say for example you want to get their opinions on the topic of “What should beginner bloggers focus on when they get started”
You will add their opinions to your blog post.
Now this is another way for all bloggers to connect with you might I add.
Also with that said more than likely those bloggers in the list will share this post. Especially the more successful ones.
As a result your blog will be exposed to their communities, meaning more traffic and more subscribers!
So yes, they already have a large following, which is why it would be a great opportunity to take advantage of publishing expert round ups.
It makes it a win/win/win for you, the bloggers, and their audience!
I haven’t done a lot of guest posting (Well so far only 1), but again, just like the expert round up, you can tap into the community of the blog you’re writing on.
And of course this will be a win/win/win!
If the blogger doesn’t see how his community can benefit from your topic, then more than likely, they’re not going to accept your offer, or even look your way to invite you.
So either way it goes, you want to be of value to the blogger and to their community.
With this combination, the collaboration will be enormous!
Collaboration on this level begets success!
Find Out What Subjects And Headlines Get The Most Traffic
Now what if you can find out what subjects and headlines of your competition that gets the most shares?
That would be cool wouldn’t it?

Sometimes your competition isn’t your arch enemy. You can definitely collaborate with them by building relationships and supporting each other on the journey to success.
You always want to make it a win/win for everyone, and show how competent your products/services are even if they promoting the same thing as you.
If you have a scarcity mindset, then it’s going to be quite a challenge for you to really progress because you deprive yourself of all of the great opportunities that comes your way.
In this area, you want to create a great reputation for yourself, and what better way to do this than to collaborate with others within and outside your niche whether they’re on their way to success or already on the level you want to be on!
Here’s a great quote that I believe sums up this entire blog post:
Life is an echo. What you send out, comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get. What you see in others, exists in you. Remember, life is an echo. It always gets back to you. so give goodness.
