When it comes to your home business, you definitely want to be someone that stands out. But are you trying to be different just to say to be different even though it’s really who you are? Let’s see how this can break you and how you can build a more unique reputation…
Being in business for yourself has many benefits to it. You get to create your own schedule of when you want to work and you can make as much money as you want without a cap on it.
But when it comes to promoting what you do, this is a skill set all in within itself. When I was in college, I thought marketing was an easy major and thought it wouldn’t be something that would challenge me. So I got into Computer Science and then changed it to Computer Information System (CIS).
For CIS I still had to take some business classes and one of them was Marketing 101. I got a little taste of marketing and it was more of a challenge then what I thought, but still it wasn’t enough. In the back of my mind I was wondering why there were so many people that found it so fascinating.
Then some years later I started my home business and got into the nuts and bolts of marketing. That’s when I said “OOOOHHHHH, that’s why people find it some fascinating.” You know some people have to find stuff out for themselves 😉
Being able to market, and market well is a craft in and of itself. Some people are just natural at it, while the majority of us have to go through a learning process that can take some time.
What I find fascinating about people who can market well is how they can catch a multitude of people’s attention, maintain their attention, and eventually they end up buying something. The thing I notice and felt is that there is something different about these people that draws this type of attention.
The Mistake That Most Marketers Make
When you see this minority of successful marketers the majority of us think to ourselves how we can be like them so that we can also be successful. We compare and we build this reputation based off of what we see in that minority.
But does that work for the majority of us?
For the most part it doesn’t.
Because we’re not being ourselves. It goes with the quotation at the beginning of this post. We come off different, but not as ourselves.
And you know what’s worse? If your audience can see how much you’re putting up a front. If this happens, then there goes your audience and your reputation.
So the cliché “fake it until you make it” need not apply to home business.
You want to find business partners and/or customers who are more aligned with who you are. So for starters, the best thing that you can do is be your unique self.
Yes there are many posts and articles about using a USP (Unique Selling Proposition) so that you can stand out from the rest of your competition and in order to do this, you want to definitely start out with yourself.
For someone of you it’s natural, but for others it may take some soul searching. Once this is done and applied, you will be able to naturally set yourself apart from other marketers. You’ll be able to figure out how to promote yourself and your offers much easier as well as attract the business partners and customers you want.
So don’t be different just for the sake of being different. Figure the “YOU” that you want to promote to your audience and adjust your marketing, business, products and services to it.
Now It’s Your Turn!
How do you come off different than other marketers? Is there something specific about you that you want your audience to see you as? Have you tried to come off so different that you weren’t yourself?
